Bled (pronounced[ˈbleːt]; German: Veldes, in older sources also Feldes) is a town on Lake Bled in the Upper Carniolan region of northwestern Slovenia. It is one of Slovenia’s most visited tourist destinations. The town is the administrative seat of the Municipality of Bled.
Bled has a rich history. The earliest evidence dates back to the Stone Age, with more significant settlement occurring during the Iron Age, fueled by iron mining in the nearby Alps.
While Celtic and Roman influences are evident, the arrival of the Slavs significantly shaped the region. Slavic settlements likely formed the foundations of the lakeside villages that exist today: Mlino, Želeče, Zagorice, Grad, and Rečica.
Numerous archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of past civilizations:
- Žale: The site of the modern cemetery, excavations revealed ancient burial grounds.
- Vila Bled: Archaeological finds were unearthed during the park’s creation.
- Želeče: A necropolis was discovered in 1937.
- Pristava pod Gradom: Extensive excavations revealed a large Iron Age necropolis.
- Castle Grounds: Gravesites were found near the castle entrance.
- Bled Island: Excavations on the island uncovered a significant necropolis
